Chinese Lantern with Red Envelops

Every year we try to come up with some new project for Chinese New Year.  Since we have so many red envelops, hong bao, in 2013 we made Chinese Lanterns.
Red envelopes are given to children by their parents and grandparents as a New Year's gift,  they contain money.

Finished Hong Bao Lantern

Lunar New Year Gifts

I was looking for Chinese New Year gifts for a few special people, and     Godiva is one of the places I sometimes find gifts.  Love their chocolates, and the gold theme of their boxes is always perfect for the New Year.

What was my surprise when I saw this lovely box!!

It is $50.00 for a box of 20 pieces, so I guess I should just buy one for our family instead.

BOOKS

"The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals."  Melody Beattie

Books play a great role in our home.  We believe reading is important, and we tried to instill it into our children from an early age ...
One likes to read
One not really, only if she has too!
One loves, loves loves to read, every day, all day and nigh.

At times we find it challenging to find it challenging to find books for our children, specially when they were younger.

A book long enough is a great blog about books.  It has great lists of books for kids and adults.

So, if you are looking for a book, give it a try.

It is that time of the year again.  Time to prepare and celebrate Chinese New Year.  This is the year of the Sheep/ Goat/Ram, so if you were born in 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, and 2003 this is your year!

The actual date of Chinese New Year is February 19, 2015.  A late one this year.

In our community the celebrations started on January 31, with the Ohio Contemporary Chinese School celebration from 11:00am - 7:00 pm.  This is the best and biggest celebration in Ohio.  Chinese schools from different parts of Ohio come to participate in the celebration.

That same evening, we went to another celebration at the Columbus School of Chinese.  This celebration is for families and students of the school.  Children and adults alike, had the opportunity to show their language skills by doing personal introductions and reciting some poetry.    The dinner that followed was delicious.

This past weekend Central Ohio Families with Children form China had it own celebration.  Lion dancers welcomed in the New Year of the Sheep, and COFCC's Kids Chinese Arts Program children provided the entertainment.

The celebrations will continue for the next few weeks.  We hope you have a chance to go out and enjoy the year of the Sheep.
